Morning Folks. I am taking a look at the top 5 fights on the Cage Legacy 12/ Celtic Gladiator card this morning. Promises to be a great event with a couple of titles on the line. Leave a comment here or on our Facebook page with your own predictions.
Katie Saull (Straight Blast Gym Ireland) V Aleksandra Toncheva (Desant ММА Varna) Atomweight Pro MMA
Katie Saull as a 5 fight professional has a slight edge in pro experience. She is currently on a 3 fight win streak. It looks like she has also recently moved to SBG Ireland and is now working under the tutelage of John Kavanagh. She is also affiliated with Winnipeg Amateur Martial Arts. Her experience has come east of the Aran Islands so I place a fair bit of weight in her favour as a result.
Aleksandra Toncheva hails from Varna in Bulgaria. Her performances to date as a professional have been a mixed bag. A win, a draw and a single loss. She has huge pedigree as an amateur having performed outstandingly in both the European and World IMAAF championships in 2016. Similar to many women in Europe getting good fights might well have been a problem for her. Well she is in luck here. Promises to be a great match up with Katie Saull.
Verdict: Katie Saull
Pat Lehane (SBG Cork) V Emil Piatek (C-Mac) Lightweight Cage Legacy & Celtic Gladiator titles.
Two Titles on the line for this one. Pat Lehane is fighting out of SBG Cork and is still a teenager. Very active on the amateur scene over the last two years and represented Ireland at the the World Juniors in 2018. As you’d expect a mixed bag of results to date as he learns and builds his skillset. Won the Cage Legacy Featherweight Title last time out.
Emil Piatek has an 8-1 amateur record and has fought across a number of different promotions to date. He has taken the more traditional route to MMA and has bypassed competitions like the IMMAF Europeans and Worlds. Also fought last time out at Cage Legacy 11 in March. It is hard to ignore his pedigree and record.
Verdict: Emil Piatek
Adam Darby (Team Ryano) V John Byrne (SBGi) Super Lightweight CL MMA Title
Another Cage Legacy title on the line here in the super Lightweight division. As you would expect of fighters coming out of a Team Ryano gym Adam Darby is a superb finisher on the ground and has amassed an 8-1 record as an amateur. The only blemish on his resume is a loss at IMMAF european championships last year.
John Byrne is an other fighter out of SBG Ireland on this card. A hugely experience amateur going back to 2011. 18 amateur fights as per his tapology record. It is a tale of two halves. In the first half of his career John blitzed his way through the competition on the island. Since 2016 it has been more of a mixed bag. His most recent outings have been on the AKUMA promotion.
Verdict: Adam Darby.
Jack Hamill (SBGi) V Kenny Mokhonoana (C-Mac) Welterweight MMA Bout
Jack Hamill is a 5 fight amateur with a record of 3 and 2. He fought on the Cage Legacy card in March 2019 and had a loss to his opponent Kenny Mokhonoana, so he will be looking bounce back from that one.
Kenny is fighting out of C-Mac and had a 3rd round stoppage win over this opponent in March via a D’arce choke. Hugely experienced amateur and I expect the same result again.
Verdict Kenny Mokhonoana
Ryan Scully (MMA Cork) V Fionn Hickey (SBG Cork) Super Lightweight MMA Bout
This one is an All Cork affair so I expect the crowd in the Neptune Stadium to be on their feet for this one.
This is hard one to call. Ryan has one amateur fight on his record, a win on Cage Legacy 6 just over a year ago. He comes from a Boxing and Muay Thai background so a striking contest will favour him.
Fionn Hickey is only slightly more experienced having had two amateur fights to date. He hasn’t fought for nearly two years so it will be interesting to see how he performs on his return.
Verdict Ryan Skully
